EXCERPT: LOVE AND…GUILT

“So…here you are.”

“Here I am.”

“A good cop on a shit planet. Surrounded by criminals who want to feast on your innards.”

I attempted a grin. “Only some of them. And what makes you think I’m a good cop?” That was quite a leap.

“Any other flatfoot would have delivered me to Granny. Let me get carved by Scale.”

“Maybe not all of them.”

She snorted. “You put yourself at risk, helping me. They wouldn’t have done that.” Probably not. She turned a bit; her gaze became steadier. “Why?”

I stared at her exquisite face. Swallowed. My pulse thrummed. She was far too close, I could smell her breath. Feel her warmth. That old familiar ache swelled. “Haven’t you figured that out yet?” A whisper. No need to say it out loud.

“I—”

Didn’t let her finish. Didn’t want to hear. Couldn’t bear it if it was some kind of gentle rebuff.

I leaned forward and silenced her with a kiss. A soft one. Gentle.

She didn’t pull away. Our lips clung.

Her taste suffused me, filled my brain. Elated me. Made me whole and left me empty at the same time. Left me longing for more. I knew it couldn’t happen. Could never happen, but that didn’t quash my hunger. My hope.

“Guess I’m pretty lucky too,” she murmured. And then she nestled closer and laid her head on my chest. I froze. And then, when I could manage it, curled my arms around her and held her.

And tried to ignore that annoying ripple of guilt.
