Lara knows she should feel lucky. Married to the man of her dreams, with a gorgeous new baby, she should be enjoying her happy-ever-after. But she never expected motherhood to be so difficult, or for her life to change so dramatically.

Alex has it all: hot, tattooed looks, a beautiful wife, and a band that's finally getting noticed. A lucrative offer of a US tour should be the icing on the cake. But as he leaves the country, distance isn't the only thing that starts to pull their relationship apart.

With half a world dividing them, Alex and Lara have to battle for a marriage they once took for granted.

Broken Chords is the second story in the Love in London series but can be read completely as a stand-alone.
Though it's a series, it's not a serial and there are no cliffhangers, each book features a different couple!

MY REVIEW:

This was a great book! It is a story about Alex, who is an up and coming rock star in a band, but it's a little different from the get go. Yes, he is your typical hot, sexy tattoed guy, but he is married and has a 6 month old child. He and his band mates are hoping to get to the next level of fame and move out of playing the small clubs.

Lara is suffering from Post Natal Depression and it starts to cause some issues between them. When Alex's band finally gets scheduled for a 3 month tour in the US and he jumps at the chance to go, despite Lara's suffering, things begin to go downhill.

"It's all my f*cking fault is it? Poor Lara, having to get a bloody job because her husband's inadequate. Did you ever think that if it weren't for you and Max I might actually be out there making something of myself? That we could really make a go of the band if I didn't have to work on some shitty building yard all day so we can afford our bloody rent?"

So Alex is off on tour and poor Lara is back home raising Max on her own, dealing with her own depression. To make matters worse, Alex had forgotten to straighten out his cell phone before he leaves and has to share a phone with Stuart. I felt terrible for Lara many times with all of the speculation, not really knowing what Alex is doing since their contact in infrequent.

She meets the new neighbor, David, and thank goodness for him. He is a wonderful character and they become good friends.

"You should talk to her soon," I say. "Keeping secrets isn't going to help your relationship."
"You should know I'm rolling my eyes now," David replies. And though all I can see is his back, I know he's telling the truth. "I'm not going to take relationship advice from you."
"How rude."
He cough-laughs. "Have I upset you?"
"Nope, I'm practically uninsultable. It's like water off a duck's back."
"I think you made up a word."
"Duck?"
"Uninsultable."
"Oh, it's a word," I insist. "Look it up in the dictionary."
"Yeah, of course, I'll do that. I'm pretty sure it's right next to gullible."

I'm not going to say much more because I don't want to give anything away. I loved the flashback scenes between Alex and Lara. What they feel for each other is palpable. But I will say that there were times I just hated Alex!! This book had my heart in my mouth and I couldn't put it down!! I will embarassingly admit that sometimes when I watch a movie that has me on the edge of my seat, I bite my fingernails. This was the first time ever that I did that with a book! So all in all, that's a weird compliment to Ms. Elks.

I look forward to reading more from this author!

I received this book in exchange for my honest review.

“You want one?” he asked, cupping his hand to shade his match from the slight breeze.
“I don’t smoke. It’s a disgusting habit.” I smiled, letting him know I was flirting more than anything. Trying to wind him up.
He stared at me, throwing the burnt-out match into the ashtray. Already, I’d noticed Alex had this intense way of making me feel as if nothing else mattered. That I was the only interesting thing in the room—or in this case, the street.
“You’re one of those, then,” he said.
“One of what?”
“A crusader.” He inhaled deeply, then let the smoke drift out of his lips. Even I had to admit he looked sexy.
His words made me grin. I was anything but; smoking rarely bothered me at all. “I don’t kiss boys who smoke,” I said.
The corner of his lip twitched up. He leaned forward, still staring intently. “That’s good. I don’t want you kissing them.”
“You’re a boy who smokes,” I pointed out.
This time a full-on smirk broke out on his face. “I’m the exception that proves the rule, sweetheart.”
The way he said it made my heart hammer against my chest. There was something about Alex Cartwright that made me feel breathless. I wasn’t used to boys like him, ones who oozed sexuality out of every pore. Until then my boyfriends had been more friend than boy. Low key, almost feminine
Alex didn’t have a feminine bone in his body.
“What makes you think I want to kiss you, anyway?”
“You’re the one who brought up kissing, not me.” Another cocky response. “Not to mention the fact you keep looking at my mouth and licking your lips. I can tell you want to eat me for breakfast.”
The image his words conjured up made me choke on my coffee. I spluttered the hot liquid out. Alex started to laugh.
“Kissing. I was still talking about kissing.”
