EXCERPT

Excerpt #1:
Hope didn’t see him for long, though she’d gotten an eyeful. Ari was thick with muscles, not an ounce of fat. Oh my god, everywhere, and she did mean everywhere! She could hardly look away. Hope couldn’t help but squeal when he picked her up. Her legs against his arms and chest sent a shiver through her. His heat made Hope feel like she was burning up. She shuddered.
“Put me down. I’m not going in the lake.”
“Oh yes you are. Since you won’t undress and your clothes need it anyway, in you go.”
With that, Hope flew through the air, landing with a splash in the lake. She sputtered and came up, wheeling her arms to get above water.
“You jerk!” Oh, she saw red. “How dare you!”
Ari stood in the water to his ankles laughing.
He had tossed her a good six feet away and let her sink like a stone. He didn’t even know if she could swim! “What if I couldn’t swim, huh? What would you do then?” Hope was so mad she splashed him.
Ari just laughed.
She heard Crag snickering somewhere behind her. She turned and splashed at him too.
“I would have saved you. If you’d quit splashing and stand up, you’ll see you could stand.” Ari frowned suddenly. “Oh no. You can’t stand with your leg.” He started toward her and Hope pushed deeper into the water.
“Leave me be.”
Excerpt #2:
“Are you okay?” Ari whispered above her.
Hope nodded her head. Ari was warm against her, contrasting with the cold of the water. Shifting, Hope realized her leg was beginning to throb. “My leg is starting to hurt. I think I need to sit down.”
Ari swung Hope up into his arms and strode out of the water. They neared the fire only to see Crag lying to one side, a snore rising from him.
“I forgot about your brother. You don’t think he saw, do you?” Hope buried her head in Ari’s neck. “You can’t do that again.”
Ari’s arms tightened around her.
“Ari, when are you going to take me home?”
Ari settled down on top of a rock, still holding Hope. “Not tonight.” He attempted to pull Hope’s shirt off.
Hope fought to keep it on.
He frowned. “It’s wet. You can’t sleep in it.”
“I can’t sleep naked next to you.” She glanced at Crag. “Not with the two of you here.”
“Well, you can’t sleep with it wet either.” They were playing tug of war with her shirt, but Hope was determined to keep it on. “Fine, how about I let you wear my shirt. Will that work?”
Excerpt #3:
Hope heard a groan and something plopped down above her. Over the edge of the rock, eight long, sharp talons appeared. Hope had never seen anything that big; whatever it was settled down with a sigh. The movements ceased, but Hope could still hear something moving around. It looked like whatever was above her was not alone.
She just hoped that whatever it was didn’t look under the rock. She heard more movement and more scrambling on another rock. Hope slowly turned to look toward it, hoping that it didn’t see her. When it settled, Hope gasped and froze. It was the same kind of monster that had stolen her away! Its head whipped towards her sound, peering toward her.
Hope wasn’t sure it could see her where she was at. She hoped she was in enough of a shadow that if she didn’t move, it would lose interest. The creature craned its head trying to see where she was at but it didn’t move, just settled down on the rock. Rumbles and growls came from it.
When it didn’t move, Hope exhaled slowly.
A head craned over the rock, looking upside down at her.
She screamed.
Noises emerged from its snout.
Hope whimpered.
Smoke curled from its nostrils. Never had she seen a creature like this.
Hope pressed against the rock as far from it as she could get. It sniffed her, eyes peering at her in what looked like curiosity.
